One of the most common questions parents ask before booking is whether they can use their own photographer for senior pictures, or whether the school’s contracted photographer is the only option. The honest answer is that it depends on your school, and understanding the difference between a yearbook photo and full senior portraits makes the whole thing much less confusing.

Not necessarily. Every school handles this a little differently. Some require their contracted photographer for the yearbook photo specifically, while others allow students to submit their own.
A yearbook photo is typically one specific headshot that meets your school’s formatting requirements, while senior portraits are a full session capturing your senior’s personality and this milestone in a way one required headshot never could.
Even if your school requires their photographer for that one yearbook image, that requirement has nothing to do with whether you can also book a full senior session elsewhere.
According to the Student Press Law Center, schools generally cannot enforce an exclusive photography contract against students who want to submit their own photo, since student rights around yearbook content typically take priority over a vendor contract, though student yearbook editors can still set their own formatting standards.

Check with your school’s yearbook advisor or student services office early in the school year, since submission windows and requirements vary and you do not want to find out about a deadline the week it is due.
